Our Nursery Eco-Sources Native Plants to Keep Your Local Landscapes Alive

Eco-sourced plants are those grown from seeds or cuttings collected from naturally-occurring vegetation close to where they will be replanted as part of a restoration or re-vegetation project. Because eco-sourced seeds and plants are already well-adapted to the climate and soils of the local area, they will be more likely to survive and flourish than outside plant stock. It is also important to use local species and local seed sources to retain the natural character of the region.

Our policy is to get seeds from different locations each year to maintain genetic diversity in our plantings. We have seeds from Motatapu Gorge, Fernburn, Matukituki River, West Wanaka, Mou Waho Island, Stevenson's Island, Clutha River Outlet, Luggate, Hawea River, Glendhu Bluffs, Queensberry Hills and the Millennium Track/Ironside Hill.

Te Kākano is able to provide local community and not-for-profit groups with eco-sourced native plants for eligible re-vegetation projects. Applications are open all year round.
